Beat the Backlist 2019 – I’m doing it!!!!

Novel Knight has posted her annual Beat the Backlist challenge (you can join in here).

This helped me so much in 2018 so it was a no brainer for me to join in again.

What is Beat the Backlist?

In short, this is a reading challenge where your goal is to read backlist books (published prior to the current year). For 2019, it means reading any book that was published in 2018 or earlier. You have the entire year to read as many books as you can/want. YOU set your own reading goal.

My challenge

I have 31 books I want to read for my challenge. I thought that was quite a realistic number to aim for and as it’s only 2 and a bit books a month, I still have the time to read all those lovely new releases!

I’m also going to do the Hogwarts House Mini Challenge and my House is Ravenclaw!

This is my list:

  • Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
  • Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo
  • Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo
  • Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
  • Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor
  • Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor

Review Regurge – Beneath the Haunting Sea by Joanna Ruth Meyer….

I’m back with another review regurge! <—- (every time I type that I get visions of a mama bird feeding her baby, you know beak right down the babies throat?!!!!)

Anyway, I was on holiday when I read this and I remember being so glued to it because it was beautiful.

It was my first book by this author and it won’t be my last. I saw her next book is called Echo North and is out on 15 January on Kindle so will defo be grabbing that!

BENEATH THE HAUNTING SEA BY JOANNA RUTH MEYER

You can find my original post here.

My review

I haven’t been this enthralled in a book for a while! Mystery and legend. Fave!

This was a holiday read and I had to grab chapters here and there, which saddened me as I wanted to gulp it all up at once! I found myself waking up before my family to snatch a few chapters!

It was just utterly beautiful and breath taking although I must admit the romance did irk me. A love square. <—- is that even a thing? A square? It is now! But in the end I loved them all!

The mystery of the story gripped me. It was so amazing. The questions and the ‘Oh god I can’t wait to read more’ is the mark of a fab book for me.

Happy Firework Night!

Happy Firework Night UK!

We went to a public fireworks display on the weekend so tonight we will be having some sparklers in the garden with some hotdogs!

Stay safe!

Don’t know about Firework Night?

From Wikipedia: Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Night and Firework Night, is an annual commemoration observed on 5 November, primarily in Great Britain. Its history begins with the events of 5 November 1605, when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London; and months later, the introduction of the Observance of 5th November Act enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot’s failure.

BOOKS I READ

Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J Maas

980 pages. This is one big book! But it filled my heart with joy! I even cried which is so not like me! I’ll be posting my review soon.

I decided to scrap my ‘What I’m currently reading’ and ‘What I want to read next’ and put here what I want to read for the month.

  • Nightblood by Elly Blake (left over from my October reads!)
  • The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer (last 3 books from Beat the Backlist)
  • Archenemies by Marissa Meyer
  • Kennedy by Addison Jane (beta)
  • Pucked Love by Helena Hunting (arc)
  • Violent Desires Anthology (arc)

Pretty ambitious considering size of some of these books, wish me luck!!!

How was your reading week?

What books did you read?

Remember November Reading Challenge!

Grazing through posts and I read this, it really made me think…….

‘Remember all those challenges you started throughout the year?
Those lists of books you were going to read, prompts you were going to tick off, goals you were going to reach?’
Well Kathy at Books and Munchies is right. It’s nearly the end of the year. Am I going to meet what I set myself?
Remember November – to remembering and catching up on all those challenges, goals and reading lists! Time to take matters into our own hands again!
Rules
◊ Post a blogpost saying you’ll be joining me trying to reach all those goals and challenges we committed ourselves to throughout the year.

◊ Share your list of challenges, goals and whatnot and state what you’re going to try and reach / tick off during this month’s read-a-thon.

I didn’t really do lots of year long challenges but I did do the Goodreads Challenge and Beat the Blacklist.

I’m not too worried about my Goodreads, I’ve upped my total twice now so it will be what it is at the end of the year.

Beat the Backlist – I set myself a goal of 48 books and I’ve done pretty well by already reading 45. I am so close so this is just what I need to get my bum in gear!
The 3 books are The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer so I dedicate my November to them!

Are you joining in?

Are you close with your goals?

Review: City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab

20181007_083639_0001.png

So this ticked a couple of things off my book bucket list!

  • Spooky read close to Halloween ✔
  • Read a middle grade book ✔

And I loved it. And I want more!!!

CJR THE BRIT REVIEW

I loved the Monsters of Verity, I haven’t read a middle grade book before and the blurb grabbed me (and it’s nearly Halloween!)

Ghosts, ghouls and spectres…..and Cassidy ‘A little special. A little strange. Not quite alive but definitely not dead’. And she has a sidekick. A best friend. Jacob. Who isn’t alive.

I can’t tell you how much I loved this read. I flew through it! It was spooky and filled with facts that pulled me in and made me want to look up the actual history, I don’t think a book has ever made me want that! And was that may be a hint of more adventures to come?
