Review: Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor

Title: Days of Blood and Starlight

Series: Daughter of Smoke and Bone #2

Author: Laini Taylor

Same as book 1, this was a buddy read with Sophie from Beware of the Reader and Trisy from Bobo’s Book Bank!

Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love and dared to imagine a world free of bloodshed and war.

This is not that world.

Art student and monster’s apprentice Karou finally has the answers she has always sought. She knows who she is—and what she is. But with this knowledge comes another truth she would give anything to undo: She loved the enemy and he betrayed her, and a world suffered for it.

In this stunning sequel to the highly acclaimed Daughter of Smoke & Bone, Karou must decide how far she’ll go to avenge her people. Filled with heartbreak and beauty, secrets and impossible choices, Days of Blood & Starlight finds Karou and Akiva on opposing sides as an age-old war stirs back to life.

While Karou and her allies build a monstrous army in a land of dust and starlight, Akiva wages a different sort of battle: a battle for redemption. For hope.

But can any hope be salvaged from the ashes of their broken dream?

‘Once upon a time, an angel and a devil held a wishbone between them. And its snap split the world in 2.’

I was so glad to be back in this world to see what happens next!

I was going to split this review up in the quotes like above, like I did for my review of DOSAB but I didn’t think I should.

I’m being honest now and saying I really struggled with the first half of this book.  The first few chapters I found really choppy and then the rest of the first half was strung out and honestly, dull. I hated myself for feeling like that too because of my love for book 1.

But.

I am glad I persevered because then it got better.

My fears for Karou losing herself got better.
My hope for Akiva that was always there amplified.
My hope for a future for them was somewhat restored.

So to sum it up….I had a hard time rating this! How does one rate something they half didn’t think much of but then the other half loved?  Im going to with 3.5 leaning to 4. Why? Akiva of course!!!!

  1. I had a book like that recently except it was a thriller. The first half put me to sleep then the second half was basically like a slasher movie and was very intense. It is very hard to rate, for sure!

  2. I hate it when that happens, Caro. It’s such a struggle to rate a story that you only loved halfway through. I usually give these 3 stars (good) then explain in the review as you’ve done.
I’ve still got the trilogy of paperbacks on the top of my bookshelf – unread. Lol! I promise I will get around to them… eventually.
I hope the final book is more consistent.
