Romance Awareness Month: dream collabs in romance

As you have already seen from our other weekly posts, August is the month of romance!

I have teamed up with Sophie and Trisy to write different posts about romance!

Today we give you our dream collaboration between romance writers!

If we got to pair them, how would they collaborate and what story would they write?

Sophie’s pairing

I have several unicorn authors but two that I think would collaborate easily together and write something dream worthy: Amy Harmon paired with Leylah Attar!

How would they collaborate? Easily or with lots of booze to stand the other?

None of these is a “serial romance writer”. I mean they write one book a year or even every two or three year for Leylah Attar.

That’s important as that means that they should work and brainstorm at a similar pace.

No one would be rushed or pressured by the other.

Both have a deep, insightful and gorgeous writing. Leylah also adapts her writing and phrasing to the character and story she writes. Mingling with Amy’s style should be effortless.

Both have confided being booknerds as kids (see their respective interviews on this blog). Both have always been creative, even if Leylah had to wait a long time before writing.

Leylah is curious and loves to learn and I think that Amy being really into research and all to write her books (historical, fantasy) they would talk endlessly about everything they discovered and learned for their next book.

Leylah also has a deep sense of humor and I think that she would make Amy laugh so hard!

Verdict: easy collaboration.

What kind of story would they write?

I think a historical romance with a hint of supernatural would suit both of them. It would be an epic and exhilarating love story between two broken or flawed characters.

Let’s dream here!

The male character would be knightly like ...a templar! There is a hint of forbidden here as templars are akin to monks hence, not prone to have lovers. Templars were a Catholic military order and that should suit Amy’s love for spirituality.

Our hero would be a fighting templar sent in a crusade to free the Holy Land from Islam.

Let’s say that he was deadly wounded in a battle and left for dead. Our female character would be of islamic religion, from a nomad tribe but living on the outskirts of the tribe. Her mother died when giving birth to our female character and she was born with a special mark on her skin. Her people consider her a witch. She’s been beaten by her father as a kid and had such trauma that she has not spoken for more than a decade. Her best friend is a falcon she rescued when he was a fledgling.

She would stumble upon our knight and will heal him. He’ll spend time with her and her tribe, realizing that they are not the devils they are rumored to be. Except of course those tormenting her. He will blend in so well that when Catholics will attack the tribe, he will fight to protect them. Alas, she’s been captured in the attack to be sold as a slave. She will be shipped to France and he will follow her, trying to find her because he is in love and can’t stand the idea of living without her. He’ll find her thanks to her falcon and will go plead his case to the King of France or the Pope.

Of course you’ll have topics like: accepting differences, opening your eyes and heart to other culture, what’s faith and who is God etc.

It would be an epic romance with a HEA!

Caro’s pairing

Pairing: Sarah J Maas and Kristen Ashley!

I feel they are both very descriptive authors and I want all that detail. My idea is something completely different from both of them than the stories they have written so far!
The old pharohs of Egypt fascinate me and they sound like a flighty, blood thirsty, old bunch, killing off siblings, husbands and whoever to get what and where they want.
So…..the story…..and bear with me here because an author I am not!
In my mind I would love them to write a paranormal, historical romance in the age of the Egyptians.
I see a powerful priestess and her lover who is a total alpha male warrior but also a paranormal creature, I’m leaving towards a werewolf but not sure if that’s been overdone!
Our Priestess is the guardian of a sacred amulet for the pharaohs that helps them transcend into the afterlife…..but it has been stolen.
The Priestess, accompanied by her her warrior lover have to get the amulet back before anyone knows its missing, or face execution.
Along the way they face many dangers, spiritual and physical. There are villains, there are sexy times and obviously with these two authors there will be shocks and twists!

Trisy’s pairing

Hey y’all! Dream collaboration between two of my favorite authors? Oh my gosh, this one was soooo hard! Not going to lie, it took me several days to decide but I finally landed on Kristen Ashley and J.R. Ward!

If you’ve never read these authors, I’ll tell you that they both tend to write uber alpha males and sassy smart females. They both also write sexy paranormal romance.
So, how to combine JR Ward’s, Black Dagger Brotherhood series full of possessive vampires and Kristen Ashley’s Chaos series with studs on motorcycles?!?
Picture this: there’s a rash of abductions happening. Women are disappearing everywhere. The Chaos men don’t like to turn to others outside of their motorcycle club but when one of their own gets taken, they must find someone who can help because these women have disappeared to a sinister place that a mere human can’t go (think maybe a wolves’ lair or a trolls’ cave or maybe a demon’s realm).
Word on the street is, there’s a vampire that may be able to help. Normally, vamps are forbidden from exposing their true nature to any human. But the vampire Blind King has made an exception for the Chaos MC because humans aren’t the only ones being preyed on. (And the Chaos men may even get some help from Hawk Delgado and his commandos!)
While the males are learning how to work together, the abducted women are making escape plans of their own. I mean…the men aren’t the only bad asses in the Chaos MC or the Black Dagger Brotherhood!
Of course, there MUST be multiple POVs, plenty of saucy time, sassy women, over the top men, a bit of nail-biting suspense, just a dash of humor and a happy ever after (or maybe a happy for NOW ending?!?)💜

What do you think of our pairings and our stories? Would you read them? Should we send this to these authors?

Review: Forest of Souls by Lori M Lee

Title: Forest of Souls

Series: Shamanborn #1

Author: Lori M Lee

Sirscha Ashwyn comes from nothing, but she’s intent on becoming something. After years of training to become the queen’s next royal spy, her plans are derailed when shamans attack and kill her best friend Saengo.

And then Sirscha, somehow, restores Saengo to life.

Unveiled as the first soulguide in living memory, Sirscha is summoned to the domain of the Spider King. For centuries, he has used his influence over the Dead Wood—an ancient forest possessed by souls—to enforce peace between the kingdoms. Now, with the trees growing wild and untamed, only a soulguide can restrain them. As war looms, Sirscha must master her newly awakened abilities before the trees shatter the brittle peace, or worse, claim Saengo, the friend she would die for.

Reading.

Loving it.

Then 2 words.

2 words.

Massive spider

Yeeeeeeew no!

I quickly got over my fear as the writing was so good and this fast paced story totally didn’t go in the direction I thought it would, no romance!

Sirscha Ashwyn is hoping to be made the Queens Shadow after working herself to the bone but her life takes a different turn when her bestie, Saengo is killed…..and Sirscha brings her back to life. Her powers revealed, she is taken to the Spider King and here is where our tale begins.

I’m not saying anymore because you need to read but I will say this….look out for Theyen. He was the star of the show for me. He is grumpy, sassy with such a dry humour that I wanted to be his bestie!

And then the ending. I was well, that’s interesting!!!

Review: Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust

Title: Girl, Serpent, Thorn

Author: Melissa Bashardoust

A captivating and utterly original fairy tale about a girl cursed to be poisonous to the touch, and who discovers what power might lie in such a curse…

There was and there was not, as all stories begin, a princess cursed to be poisonous to the touch. But for Soraya, who has lived her life hidden away, apart from her family, safe only in her gardens, it’s not just a story.

As the day of her twin brother’s wedding approaches, Soraya must decide if she’s willing to step outside of the shadows for the first time. Below in the dungeon is a demon who holds knowledge that she craves, the answer to her freedom. And above is a young man who isn’t afraid of her, whose eyes linger not with fear, but with an understanding of who she is beneath the poison.

Soraya thought she knew her place in the world, but when her choices lead to consequences she never imagined, she begins to question who she is and who she is becoming…human or demon. Princess or monster.

‘There was and there was not’

We have Soraya, the Shah’s cursed twin sister, poisonous to the touch, locked away by her family.

Then we have a soldier, Azad, who captures a div, (who knows of the curse) and Soraya hopes the div Parvaneh, is the key to her freedom.

But freedom comes in different forms.

Soraya’s evolution in this book made me so happy to read. From love interests, from learning from her mistakes, to learning she has power and to not fearing herself and to becoming her.

This was such a unique story, it was actually quite dark and I was totally surprised by it.

Romance Awareness Month: Favourite Romance Characters!

Romance awareness

Hey y’all…happy Friday!💜

The month of August is Romance awareness month! And of course, here at Bobo’s Book Bank, I’m all about the romance. So, I’ve partnered up with blogger buddies Caro from https://cjrthebrit.com  and Sophie at https://bewareofthereader.com to bring you a special post every Friday in August!

Today, we’re going to talk about our FAVORITE ROMANCE CHARACTERS! I’ll list my choices and then give you a little quote from my review as to why I love these fab men and women.

I actually have so many favorites but I’ll limit myself to 5:

1. Joey Grayson & Logan Carter from:

51913145._SX318_SY475_

Breathless (Texas Nights #3) by Lex Martin

I can’t even tell you how many times my heart swooned over this couple! Gah! Ms. Martin writes the best characters! Joey and Logan had their flaws but they felt so genuine and sincere, like they were my friends and I FLOVE that. I admired how Joey’s confidence grew throughout the story and although I pretty much guessed early on why Logan seemed sketchy, in the end, I loved the lengths that he went through for his family and for Joey.

2. Kody Lawton & Hill Gamble from:

46208087

Unforgiven (Loveless, Texas #2) by Jay Crownover

This book was the perfect culmination of suspense, romance, desire, infatuation, absolution and characters development. It tugged and pulled on my emotional heartstrings. One of Ms. Crownover’s best! Hill and Kody gave me all the feels and I cannot wait to return to Loveless for more.

3. Evelyn Taylor & Ronin Alexander from:

51008731._SY475_

The Life That Mattered Duet by Jewel E Ann

I absolutely, positively, unconditionally FLOVE Ronin and Evie together! They’re one of the best couples I’ve come across in a long time and I desperately needed them to have an HEA.

4. Feyre Archeron & Rhysand from:

16096824._SY475_

A Court of Thorns and Roses trilogy by Sarah J Maas

Freye: a human who becomes a powerful High Fae, she endures a huge transformation both physically and emotionally, she grows into an amazingly beautiful, strong woman right before you, page by page.

Rhysand: SIGH…I’m a sucker for tall, dark and handsome and Rhys definitely fits that! Sometimes, things just aren’t what they seem and you gotta look beyond the obvious to find a true heart of gold! For me, Rhys is the ANTI-HERO OF THE YEAR!

5. Violet McNamara & Miller Stratton from:

411XJjjGpyL

The Girl In The Love Song (Lost Boys #1) by Emma Scott

There’s very few books I’ve read where I’m equally in love with both main characters but this is one story where I totally am! Miller and Violet are soul mates, they’re meant to be together but the road to happiness isn’t an easy one and my heart ached for them.

FAVORITE ROMANCE CHARACTERS

Hi, Caro here! I could’ve gone on and on with my fave characters but to save your sanity (and your eyes!), I’ve picked two!

Mathias Helvar and Nina Zenik from:

23437156

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

I really didn’t want to pick them because they break my heart but how could I not, they are just the epitome of enemies to lovers!

‘She rested her head on his shoulder.

“You’re better that waffles, Matthias Helvar.”

A small smile curled the Fjerdan’s lips.

“Let’s not say things we don’t mean, my love.’

Hanna and Nik from:

29236299._SY475_

Gemina by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman

A little snippet of my review reminded me of the time I drifted away from reality for hours looking at fan art!

‘Drug dealer aside, I completely love Nik the bad boy with a soft squidgy heart (The flowers = be still my beating heart!) Let’s just say I spent a lot of time looking at fan art of him!’

Hi there!

Sophie’s favorite characters from romance books and … I had to go with three of them, knowing that Caro already chose some of my favorites with Nina and Matthias and that Trisy snatched Rhysand and Feyre!!!

But that’s not a problem as I have tons of favorite pairing in romance!

First favorite characters: Ox and Joe from Wolfsong by TJ Klune.

29233804._SY475_

This was my first M/M book but it opened my eyes and was simply so beautiful! These two are what we call in our romance lingo and OTP (One TRue Pairing).

As proof, I’ll give you the scene when they meet for the first time:

“He shook his head. “No, no, no. It’s something bigger.”

He walked toward me, his eyes going wider. Then he was running. He wasn’t big. He couldn’t have been more than nine or ten. He collided with my legs, and I barely took a step back. He started climbing me, hooking his legs around my thighs and pulling himself up until his arms were around my neck and we were face to face.

“It’s you!” I didn’t know what was going on.

“What’s me?” He was in my arms now. I didn’t want him to fall. He took my face in his hands and squished my cheeks together.

“Why do you smell like that?” he demanded. “Where did you come from? Do you live in the woods? What are you? We just got here. Finally. Where is your house?”

He put his forehead against mine and inhaled deeply. “I don’t get it!” he exclaimed. “What is it?” And then he was crawling up and over my shoulders, feet pressed against my chest and neck until he clambered onto my back, arms around my neck, chin hooked on my shoulder.

“We have to go see my mom and dad,” he said. “They’ll know what this is. They know everything.”

He was a tornado of fingers and feet and words. I was caught in the storm. (…)

“Mom! Mom. You have to smell him! It’s like… like… I don’t even know what it’s like! I was walking in the woods to scope out our territory so I could be like Dad and then it was like… whoa. And then he was all standing there and he didn’t see me at first because I’m getting so good at hunting. I was all like rawr and grr but then I smelled it again and it was him and it was all kaboom! I don’t even know! I don’t even know! You gotta smell him and then tell me why it’s all candy canes and pinecones and epic and awesome.”

If you never have read MM romance because you are afraid, go for this one, trust me!

Second favorite characters: Eva and Angelo in From Sand and Ash by Amy Harmon

29638166._SY475_

Their love story begins when they are kids but Angelo has a calling and decides to become a priest, to Eva’s utter despair. Years later, they’ll reunite through troubled times as Italy is at war. We read about WWII and these two will be …heroics!

Proof that they are a true pair, Angelo won’t be able to resist Eva, even if his love for God is deep.

One of my favorite and most poignant quotes from this book:the

He didn’t have to be immortal. He didn’t need to be a hero. He didn’t even want to be a saint. He simply wanted to be a good man worthy of Eva Rosselli. He just wanted Eva. He wanted her kisses and her eyes, her smiles and her laughter. He wanted his children in her womb and his mouth on her breasts. He wanted her legs wrapped around his hips and her arms cradling his head as he made love to her. He wanted her promises, her affection and her trust, her years and her secrets. He wanted her prayers and her pride, her tears and her troubles. He wanted Eva. And that was all”

Amy Harmon, From Sand and Ash

Third favorite characters: Poppy and Rune from A Thousand Boy Kisses by Tillie Cole

25912358._SY475_

That book was a real tear jerker! That pairing is iconic and tragic. I loved Rune’s devotion to Poppy and Poppy’s will to spare Rune so much suffering. They met when they were five years old and will remain their only love till the death and beyond. I truly needed days to recover from that love story!

Three of my favorite quotes:

This was Poppymin. the girl who would run to the blossom grove, laughing and dancing all the way… I couldn’t leave her. She couldn’t leave me. She needed me. I needed her.”

.

“Kiss eight hundred and nineteen was the kiss that changed it all. The kiss that proved that a long-haired brooding boy from Norway and a quirky girl from the Deep South could find a love to rival the greats.”

.

“This isn’t the end. It’s just a little pause in our lives. And I’ll be watching over you, every single day. I’ll be in your heart. I’ll be in the blossom grove that we love so much, in the sun and the wind.”

Tillie Cole, A Thousand Boy Kisses

So, what do you think of our choices? Have a fantastic day y’all!💜

Authors I’ve read most books by

I saw this somewhere, I think it was a Top 5 or 10 Tuesday, my apologies for not tagging but I can’t remember where I saw it (I’m still suffering lockdown brain!)

I thought this was a fab idea but as I am technically challenged it took me a while to figure out where I could get a tool to interpret the data from the .csv file from Goodreads!

Luckily I found a Bookstats tool here

https://almoturg.com/bookstats

You just need to add your exported .csv file.

The results really surprised me! Look how many romance authors versus YA authors!

  • Cora Reilly – 15 books
  • LJ Shen – 17 books
  • Amo Jones – 19 books
  • Sarah J Maas – 19 books
  • Anne Malcom – 20 books
  • Cora Brent – 22 books
  • Tillie Cole – 24 books
  • Aurora Rose Reynolds – 28 books
  • Jamie Begley – 30 books
  • Kristen Ashley – 37 books

I think this is something I will do periodically, maybe annually or every 6 months.

Have you ever done this?

Were you surprised at your results?

Top 10 Tuesday: Books I Loved but Never Reviewed

I thought I would change it up this month and do a Top 10 Tuesday which is hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl go check her blog out, you will love it.

For me 10 might be a struggle but I promise to do the best I can!

Topic = Books I Loved but Never Reviewed

So I really had to dig here! Like to the bowels of my Goodreads read pile to a time when I got back into reading and didn’t know the importance of reviews for authors!

Bridget Jones Diary

The Fellowship of the Ring by JR Tolkien

Mile High by RK Lilley

Reflected in You by Sylvia Day

What books would be on your list?

Review: Viper by Bex Hogan

Title: Viper

Series: Isles of Storm and Sorrow #1

Author: Bex Hogan

He will make me a killer. Or he will have me killed. That is my destiny.

Seventeen-year-old Marianne is fated to one day become the Viper, defender of the Twelve Isles.

But the reigning Viper stands in her way. Corrupt and merciless, he prowls the seas in his warship, killing with impunity, leaving only pain and suffering in his wake.

He’s the most dangerous man on the ocean . . . and he is Marianne’s father.

She was born to protect the islands. But can she fight for them if it means losing her family, her home, the boy she loves – and perhaps even her life?

I can’t tell you why I’ve taken so long to read this but blimey, I was hooked!

The world building was fab, numbered islands each completely different from one another coupled with the villains of the sea aboard the Maiden…….the Snakes and their Captain, The Viper.

All I can say about The Viper is that he is a very bad man. Marianne, his heir, is stuck under his control until the night of her Initiation so she can start her journey to take over as Viper…..and this is where her story is told, twists, revelations (a couple of which I was expecting!) and action.

Marianne, even though devalued by the Viper, is strong, she has morals and now she has a mission!

In the next book I want more, more Torin, more magic, more Grace and Bronn…..I’m so needy, I want it all!
