Mini Review: The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo

Title: The Familiar

Author: Leigh Bardugo

In a shabby house, on a shabby street, in the new capital of Madrid, Luzia Cotado uses scraps of magic to get through her days of endless toil as a scullion. But when her scheming mistress discovers the lump of a servant cowering in the kitchen is actually hiding a talent for little miracles, she demands Luzia use those gifts to better the family’s social position.

What begins as simple amusement for the bored nobility takes a perilous turn when Luzia garners the notice of Antonio Pรฉrez, the disgraced secretary to Spain’s king. Still reeling from the defeat of his armada, the king is desperate for any advantage in the war against England’s heretic queenโ€”and Pรฉrez will stop at nothing to regain the king’s favor.

Determined to seize this one chance to better her fortunes, Luzia plunges into a world of seers and alchemists, holy men and hucksters, where the line between magic, science, and fraud is never certain. But as her notoriety grows, so does the danger that her Jewish blood will doom her to the Inquisition’s wrath. She will have to use every bit of her wit and will to surviveโ€”even if that means enlisting the help of Guillรฉn Santangel, an embittered immortal familiar whose own secrets could prove deadly for them both.

In 16th century Madrid, Luzia is a scullion but her magic is discovered by her show off mistress who hopes to raise herself in society and, due to this, she then catches the eye of the greedy, ambitious Antonio Perez who wants to get back into the King’s good graces.

Antonio entrusts Luzia’s training to Santangel, an immortal……and sparks fly!

It was dark, there was magic, and it gave overall a solemn tone.

I must admit I enjoyed the 2nd half more than the first but the historical fantasy with added romance story was spot on. (3.5)

Review: Never Keep by Caroline Peckham

Title: Never Keep

Series: Sins of the Zodiac #1

Author: Caroline Peckham

The dragons are lost.
The elements are at war. Enlisting isnโ€™t optional.
And Iโ€™m falling for a man who wants me dead.

Iโ€™m a wielder of hearts and summoner of corruption. Heir to nothing and born to a fool in the wrong damn month.

But Iโ€™m also one of only two Fae in this divided land of hellions who might be starting to see through the lies weโ€™ve swallowed for so long.

In the year we turn twenty-one, conscripts from across the warring nations of air, fire, earth and water are sent to Never Keep โ€“ the only place in our besieged continent where our magic can be Awakened.

But something is wrong inside Never Keep. Something which might extend far beyond the reaches of this desolate fortress. Within the gothic walls of this frigid castle in the snow, weโ€™re left to hold our own against the brutal Fae from the opposing lands.

The Reapers are merciless. The Royals are lying. The Werewolves run rampant and Vampires roam the wastelands in bloodthirsty covens. But even though death lurks in every shadow of the Keep, itโ€™s the least of my worries.

Iโ€™m delving into secrets the stars donโ€™t want me uncovering, making alliances with Fae born to be my enemy, falling for a sinner while promising my heart to a different heathen and somewhere amid it all, Iโ€™m supposed to win a war.

I thought the only thing I had to do was survive my magical instruction.

Turns out, fate doesnโ€™t favour the wicked.

Back in the same world as Zodiac Academy and Reckless Boys…..but a different land and school!

~ Vesper aka The Sky Witch
~ Everest, Raincarver
~ Cayde, Drake
~ Harlon, Raincarver and Everest’s bestie
~ Kaiser, Fury and all round evil bad a…..

Of course Kaiser was my fave!

Vesper and Everest are both outcasts but oh so different, and they are strong, determined ladies, it’s no wonder they find themselves drawn together.

I really don’t want to say more but if you loved ZA then you will love this darker feeling romantasy!

This was a slow starter but I guess we needed to get to know the new world, the characters and the different places in The Waning Lands.

But my gosh, after that halfway mark, I was so hooked, so much tension!

I actually can’t believe I have to wait until April 2025 now after that ending!

Donโ€™t know about Firework Night?

From Wikipedia: Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Day, Bonfire Night and Firework Night, is an annual commemoration observed on 5 November, primarily in Great Britain. Its history begins with the events of 5 November 1605, when Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London; and months later, the introduction of the Observance of 5th November Act enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plotโ€™s failure.

The Sunday Post! A wash out!

The Sunday Post is a blog news meme hosted by Caffeinated Reviewer  Itโ€™s a chance to share news, a post to recap the past week on your blog and showcase books and things we have received.

Hope you’ve had a good week!

Hope you had a good Halloween!

I had this week off work and it’s been a bit of a washout really! I spent 2 days in bed feeling awful (damn hormones!), then another day feeling under the weather and then my oven broke!

I only finished one book at the start of the week as I couldn’t bring myself to read anything as I felt so bad!
