Am I a seasonal reader??

Do you have seasonal reading habits?

This is something that has intrigued me for a while so I decided to take to Goodreads to see if I had any seasonal reading habits. In my mind I thought I did so I wanted to actually see if I was right.

Summer

I thought I would’ve got more of my reading done in summer…sitting in the garden/on the beach/in the park reading pages aplenty but that wasn’t the case.

But if I think about it, I spend most of my summer busy, be it on holiday or out doing stuff with my son enjoying the weather (and wearing him out!) so this was my least number of books read in any year.

Autumn and Winter

I’ve clubbed these 2 together as they were my most productive seasons it seems. Autumn and Winter seem to be when I get the majority of my reads in.

I thought that nights get darker earlier and it’s cold…and there is nothing like snuggling up with a hot coffee reading a book!

Spring

I thought this would be a slow season for reading but it’s not as slow as summer but not as good as Autumn/Winter.

My guess is that maybe things are starting to ramp up outside the house as the weather is better or maybe I’m experiencing a bit of burn out?

Do you think you are a seasonal reader?

What seasons do you read more books in do you think?

Review: Kill Switch by Penelope Douglas #OnTour

“I’ve done far worse than what I went to prison for.

She has no idea how bad this can get.”

Doesn’t that make you want to read? I loved Damon from the get go so this was a no brainer for me!

Title: Kill Switch

Series: Devils Night #3

Author: Penelope Douglas

WINTER

Sending him to prison was the worst thing I could’ve done. It didn’t matter that he did the crime or that I wished he was dead. Perhaps I thought I’d have time to disappear before he got out or he’d cool off in jail and be anything but the horror he was.

But I was wrong. Three years came and went too fast, and now he’s anything but calm. Prison only gave him time to plan.

And while I anticipated his vengeance, I didn’t expect this.

He doesn’t want to make me hurt. He wants to make everything hurt.

DAMON

First thing’s first. Get rid of her daddy. He told them I forced her. He told them his little girl was a victim, but I was a kid, too, and she wanted it just as much as I did.

Step two… Give her, her sister, and her mother nowhere to run and no fuel to escape. The Ashby women are alone now and desperate for a knight in shining armor.

But that’s not what’s coming.

No, it’s time I listened to my father and took control of my future. It’s time I showed them all—my family, her family, my friends—that I will never change and that I have no other ambition than to be the nightmare of their lives.

Starting with her.

She’ll be so scared, she won’t even be safe in her own head by the time I’m done with her. And the best part is I won’t have to break into her home to do it.

As the new man of the house I have all the keys.

I don’t really know where to begin.

This book did everything to me. I’m not even sure I can describe my feelings….but here goes….

The hopelessness, the sadness, the betrayal, the most beautiful thing I have ever read in my life. I felt utterly helpless in places. The despair I felt. Omg. I have never felt this many strong emotions reading a book! ‘Don’t let me go.’

Oh flipping heck. The emotion. The shock. The revelations. We come to learn all about Damon. All of it. And it is heartbreaking. It will gut you.

That crescendo from 70%, it feels like I held my breath the whole way to the end.

Damon.

Winter.

‘You’re different than them. Different than my friends. Different than Ari. Different than my parents, my sister, and every woman. You see everything.’

Review: The Wicked King by Holly Black

To say I was in love with The Cruel Prince is an understatement! I needed more Cardan!

You must be strong enough to strike and strike and strike again without tiring.

The first lesson is to make yourself strong.

After the jaw-dropping revelation that Oak is the heir to Faerie, Jude must keep her younger brother safe. To do so, she has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Navigating the constantly shifting political alliances of Faerie would be difficult enough if Cardan were easy to control. But he does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her even as his fascination with her remains undiminished.

When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her own life and the lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a Faerie world.

So it feels like I’ve been waiting for an age to read this! The Cruel Prince was such a great read…..and now I have The this in my my grabby hands.

And I loved it!

Cardan was everything I wanted him to be. Jude was….omg Jude went from strength to strength in my eyes. There was lies, there were schemes, there was treachery, there were plans, there were shocks and I want more!

‘You must be strong enough to strike and strike and strike again without tiring. The first lesson is to make yourself that strong.’

How was your reading week?

What books did you read?

TBR Thursday….The Song of Achilles

TBR Thursday is a weekly meme hosted by Kimberly Faye Reads, where you post a title from your shelf or e-reader and find out what others think about it.

My pick this week is The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller.

I read Circe and fell in love with the writing so I ran out and bought this book….but haven’t had a chance to read yet…..what did you think?

Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the court of King Peleus and his perfect son Achilles. By all rights their paths should never cross, but Achilles takes the shamed prince as his friend, and as they grow into young men skilled in the arts of war and medicine their bond blossoms into something deeper – despite the displeasure of Achilles’ mother Thetis, a cruel sea goddess. But then word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped. Torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus journeys with Achilles to Troy, little knowing that the years that follow will test everything they hold dear.

Profoundly moving and breathtakingly original, this rendering of the epic Trojan War is a dazzling feat of the imagination, a devastating love story, and an almighty battle between gods and kings, peace and glory, immortal fame and the human heart.

Review: Only Work, No Play by Cora Reilly

My love for this author knows no bounds and this book proves she can write anything!

After two years of taking care of her heartbroken father, Evie needs a new start. Leaving the States and following her sister to Australia to work as the personal assistant of rugby star Xavier – The Beast – Stevens seems like the right kind of distraction.
Tall, muscled and devilishly handsome, Xavier is the lov’ em and leav’ em kind of guy. He never forgets a girl’s name because he never bothers to remember it in the first place.
Evie soon realizes that being Xavier’s assistant is a 24/7 job; the man seems unwilling to even set an alarm for himself.
As she watches him move from one woman to the next, Evie is glad that her heart is safe from his attention. After all, she’s a far cry from the size zero models he usually takes to his bed.
But soon being around Xavier doesn’t feel like a job, and seeing him walk around his apartment half naked all the time isn’t helping either. Evie knows that giving in to her attraction will lead to heartbreak, but when Xavier starts treating her as more than just his assistant, resisting his charms seems like an impossible task.

Xavier—The Beast—Stevens….what a man.
And poor old Evie has just got a job as his assistant…..she clearly doesn’t need to use her qualifications….’He rucks and fks. That’s about it.’ <—— I love that!!!
Evie is adorable. She is so professional and so real. I just loved her!
Their banter was so funny, their friendship was just so cute and Fiona, omg Fiona, the sister….she is my spirit animal!
This author can truly write anything she wants. It was such an intoxicating read, the flow was perfect, writing perfect, characters perfect. Just all perfect…..I didn’t want it to end!!!

Review: Lust (The Elite Seven #1) by Ker Dukey

A group of romance authors have got together to write 7 books about men based on the seven deadly sins….The Elite Seven.

Since 1942, The Elite Seven Society has created and guided influential leaders, molding the country into something better. This society was birthed by Malcom Benedict II, who wanted more for Americans. More wealth. More influence. More power. Some leaders have the skills, but not the influence, and that simply wasn’t fair according to Mr. Benedict. He invested his own money and time to construct a society that bred the best of the best, year after year.

But to be the best, you must be ruthless.

Good leaders make sacrifices. Sometimes the sacrifices are hard, but the rewards are plentiful. Mr. Benedict made sure to indulge these leaders with their utmost desires. A devout Catholic himself, he designed a society that rewarded his leaders with the sins that were frowned upon. If they were giving up love and happiness and joy for the betterment of the country, they deserved something in its stead.

Pride, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Greed, Gluttony, and Lust.

Choosing leaders for this society takes intense focus. Only seven are to be selected, and the investment and time are showered upon the new seven chosen every four years. The university’s acting dean behaves as a liaison for the society, bringing the applicants to the predecessors so the selection may begin. The society members going out will bring forth a candidate the society votes on and approves.

After they are chosen, the initiates are given a token and an invitation to initiation. The initiation tests their character and ability to do what’s right for the betterment of the society. Once the initiates pass their test, they are discreetly branded with the mark of the society and groomed through challenges during the course of their elite education to breed them into the influential people they were meant to be.

Once in The Elite Seven, there is no getting out. The money and power are their reward. Should they choose to stray or break the rules, the society strips them of everything. Anything they once had will be removed. Opportunities will never arise. They will no longer have the support of the society. To this day, there have been no known occurrences of anyone from the society having to be banished. Every young man and woman aspires to be a part of the elite group whispered about amongst the privileged. Anyone who is anyone knows of the group and secretly hopes their son or daughter is selected, for good fortune is showered on the family for decades to come.

I was lucky enough to be able to sign up for all of them….And Lust by Ker Dukey is up first…..

Lust is more dangerous than love…..

Here we have the start to The Elite Seven…a society who have it all. And Lust is up first.

With a prologue that will have you reaching for the tissues, it’s the start to a bumpy ride for Rhett.

A college mentor, an invitation, the most gross dad ever and drowning in grief….what roads will this take Rhett down…..

And that ending….I need Pride….
