Review: City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare

Title: City of Lost Souls

Series: The Mortal Instruments #5

Author: Cassandra Clare

What price is too high to pay, even for love? When Jace and Clary meet again, Clary is horrified to discover that the demon Lilith’s magic has bound her beloved Jace together with her evil brother Sebastian, and that Jace has become a servant of evil. The Clave is out to destroy Sebastian, but there is no way to harm one boy without destroying the other. As Alec, Magnus, Simon, and Isabelle wheedle and bargain with Seelies, demons, and the merciless Iron Sisters to try to save Jace, Clary plays a dangerous game of her own. The price of losing is not just her own life, but Jace’s soul. She’s willing to do anything for Jace, but can she still trust him? Or is he truly lost?

Love. Blood. Betrayal. Revenge. Darkness threatens to claim the Shadowhunters in the harrowing fifth book of the Mortal Instruments series.

Here we are again with the shenanigans of the ‘this era’ Shadowhunters (you know I think I said this in the last review!)

So what do we know? Without spoilers this is hard! So basically evil is back getting ready to loose demons on the earth. Or is it? What is going on?!

Sebastian aka Jonathan is back and has Jace under his control who in turn sort of has Clary under control because of luuuuuurve….

‘There never has been any going back. Not with you.’

And what happens is just bigger, dangerous and more hairbrained than ever!

Here are a few of my thoughts …..

I really didn’t like Simon in the 1st 3 books but now I want to mummy cuddle him and I want to sit and cry with him! Honestly he is the most real, human person in this book, even though he isnt!

I also wanted to boot Alec right in his private parts, what an idiot! For several reasons. He is like a 12 year old.

And Clary, oh jeez. A teenager in love is sickening!!! First of all I enjoyed all the declarations of love….but there were eventually so many, I got a bit sick of it!!!!!!

As in the last book loved Isabelle even more. Her character growth has been amazing….and she better get her act together and fess up to Simon!!

Magnus, I love him so much! Him getting Simons name wrong every time had me laughing! Reminded me of Colonel K in Dangermouse getting Penfolds name wrong all the time!

Anyway….next book please!

  1. You had me literally 🤣 ! Isabelle and Magnus are the best characters! ❤️ Clary becomes increasingly annoying throughout the series and feel free to kick Alec a second time for me. I didn’t like the character through the entire series. Now, I liked Simon from book 1 and that totally grew with each story but then I always have a soft spot for the bungling sidekick type of character. Great review ❤️

  2. I quite liked this one too, although I felt that it suffered for not having as good a villain as Lillith was in the previous book.
Also the whole Alec and Magnus thread in this was so bad, with that Camille subplot.
Your comment about wanting to kick him really made me laugh. Given how depressing the ending was, it might’ve actually been a better way of ending it! Lauren Dane actually did that in one of her books. Her heroine had been squaring off against a couple of male love interests and rivals throughout the book, and at the very end of the book she confronts one of the guys who’d wronged her. The very last paragraph of the whole book is literally just her heroine kicking the guy as hard as she can in the balls. I always thought that was a weirdly fun way to end a book, Lol.
