Discussion: Half star ratings, what do you do?

Half Ratings……what is the proper etiquette?

When you rate a book 3.5 stars, what do you put as the star rating? 3 or 4?

Or if it’s 2.5 stars, do you hit 2 or 3?

It’s always something that’s puzzled me. I mean your slap bang in the middle of 2 ratings……

It’s such a conundrum to me!

I think I almost always go for the higher rating but now I’m actually thinking about it, I should really start dishing out the lower rating on some of the books I read as maybe I am being over nice….

What do you do?

Do you ever think that Amazon/Goodreads will change and do half ratings ever?

  1. Iโ€™ve actually never given half stars on my blog coz I keep it consistent with Goodreads… but when I feel like a book deserves that half star, I usually go for the lower end… except when itโ€™s 4.5, then I think I mark it as 5… I know, this is damn confusing… but I guess I just go by gut feeling ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

  2. Good question! If it let me down somehow I will round to the lower number if not or if I think it will carry the wrong message I aim for higher ….

  3. I remember another blogger chatting about this too. One suggestion was that the descriptions on Goodreads and Amazon ratings are a bit different. So based on those descriptions I end up rounding up on Amazon and down on Goodreads. Confusing but I canโ€™t resist those half points in my reviews! Lol

  4. When I created my blog, I was debating this issue a lot, because I canโ€™t decide when to give half starโ€ฆthat is why I rate books from 1 to 10. When it comes to goodreads/Amazon, I use the โ€œIt was amazingโ€/โ€I liked itโ€ etc. factor, because I dunno how to incorporate these half stars.

  5. I don’t use half stars only because I want my ratings to be as simple as possible … also Goodreads doesn’t have half stars so it’s easy to transfer my ratings from my blog to GR.

  6. Interesting discussion topic! Sounds like youโ€™re getting lots of different opinions here. I tend to round down for Goodreads (in general I tend to be more generous on my blog reviews)
