Discussion: When is it time to give up on a book?

gu.jpg

So I have a lot of ebooks on my tbr, I am an impulse buyer when I get paid (it’s a sickness!)

You should also know I get into a panic regularly thinking about how many I have to read! But that’s normal, yes?!

Then I pick up a book and start reading…..sometimes I’m sucked in…and other times not so much…..

So my question is, how long into a book do you give up if your not liking it?

Sometimes if it’s for a book that I have seen people love, I feel I should keep going in case I miss out on something! I mean I bought this book cause I liked the sound of the blurb or I have loved other books by the author.

But then other times I think why am I doing this to myself? Then I think of the money I’ve spent so I think I should keep going.

I know everyone can’t like everything….but when is it time to give up?

  1. I think for me, my dnf’s normally happen a few chapters in because i don’t often dnf and when i do it’s usually because i know immediatly that i don’t like the mc or the writing style or whatever. If i pass the first few chapters i struggle to give up a lot more even if i’m hating it because i feel commited to it! 😂😂

  2. I tend to keep going by telling myself that it’s just got to get better – right? But when it starts to feel like a chore, I know it’s time to quit. I just recently quit 2 very popular books after about 25% in – I just couldn’t get into them. But on the other hand I forced myself to finish one because i just had to know how it ended…..and it turned out to be a dud!

  3. Hahaha. I wish I could dnf but I haven’t been able to do that as yet. I usually end up skipping paragraphs or chapters until the end rather than just not finishing. Terrible! Lol. Bt to get to the point, I have to be either really bored with the book or really annoyed with some key element of the story/ characters.

  4. I don’t really have a specific time frame or point in a book that I decide whether I want to continue or not. I once had a book that I was almost 300 page in before I decided to put it down. Thought I might regret it, but I don’t even remember the title anymore. Other books, I read the synopsis and give the first page a try and decide to stop (even after I buy it). I also try to really think about why I want to stop. Is it because it’s a dense read? Am I just not in the mood to read that type of book? Am I subconsciously looking at the number of pages and giving up before I start?
